What is an Oriental rug?

Rug District receives hundreds of inquiries about Oriental and Persian rugs from people who are interested to learn more about them. We've compiled this list of the most commonly asked questions, with some resources. Learn more about Oriental rugs here with us!

What is an Oriental Rug?

An Oriental rug is a textile or woven carpet made from hand-knotted or hand-woven quality materials such as silk, wool, and cotton. Some Oriental rugs can take over 2 years to make, and last over 200 years! Oriental rugs are made throughout Asia, including China, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, and more.

Is an Oriental rug the same thing as a Persian or Turkish rug?

The terms have often been used interchangeably, however they are different: Persian rugs are typically made of single-loop knots, resulting in a finer weave, while Turkish rugs are made using a double-loop. Of course these methods have evolved slightly over time. Persian rugs are also specifically made in modern day Iran – or Persia – while Turkish rugs are made in Turkey. Many people will still refer to all of them "Oriental rugs" moreso for convenience and ease of expression.

Differences in style

As one of the services to our customers, Rug District sells Oriental rugs on consignment. Many of the rugs we sell may look very different, take a look at some of them [HERE] to see the variation in colour, size, style, pattern, and weave. They are all very unique in their own way!

How should my Oriental rug be cleaned?

This is by far one of the most frequently asked questions we receive at Rug District. Oriental rugs in general can be vacuumed and even taken outside to shake them out (depending on their size and weight, of course!), but over time they really should be professionally cleaned and sanitized, as well as checked for deficiencies. Read [THIS BLOG] that answers the question: "Should my rug be professionally cleaned".
